Privacy Policy

The articles, the study tools, and the calm room are free, and you never need an account to use them. There are no ads anywhere on the site.

Many free sites pay their bills by selling what they learn about you. We don't. We never sell, rent, or trade your information, never pass it to advertisers or data brokers, and never build an advertising profile of you. Google Analytics, which we use to count visits, runs with Google's advertising features switched off.

A lot of the site works without sending us anything at all.

• Your study progress, saved articles, theme, and calm room settings live in your browser's local storage and never reach us.
• The assistant's private mode runs a small AI model inside your browser, so the conversation never leaves your device.
• Reading, studying, and the calm room all work without an account.

Here is everything else, with the reason for each.

Google Analytics and Vercel Analytics tell us which pages are read, how long people stay and how far down they get, which outside links they follow, the site that sent them, their device and browser type, and roughly which country or region they are in. That is how we learn which explanations land and which need work. Analytics never receives your name or email address. Google Analytics sets cookies to do this; see the cookie policy.

Read and like counts

We count how many times each article is read and liked. A read counts once per browser per day, using a marker kept in your browser. If you like an article while signed out, we set a random identifier cookie and store only a scrambled, one-way version of it, so you can undo the like later. Signed in, the like belongs to your account. No IP address is stored with either.

AI study tools

When you ask for a summary, a quiz, flashcards, or an explanation, or talk with the assistant, the article text and whatever you type go to an AI provider to write the answer: Anthropic by default, with OpenAI or Google stepping in when it is unavailable. We don't keep your questions.

To keep the tools free for everyone, there are daily and monthly limits. To enforce them, we record how many tokens each request used (a number, never the words), tied to your account or, when you are signed out, to a scrambled, one-way version of your IP address. When a summary or quiz is made for an article, we may keep a copy with no link to you, so the next reader gets it faster.

Accounts, if you want one

An account is optional; it lifts the daily limit on the study tools. If you make one, we store your email address and, if you give one, a display name. Your password is stored only as a hash by our database provider, so not even we can read it. If you sign in with Google, Google shares your name and email address with us.

Email

If you write to us, we keep your message so we can reply.

A few companies process data for us, each only to provide its part of the site:

• Vercel hosts the site and provides Vercel Analytics.
• Supabase stores accounts, usage counters, and article read and like counts.
• Google provides Google Analytics and, if you choose it, Google sign-in.
• Anthropic, and when it is unavailable OpenAI or Google, write the study tools' answers from the text sent to them.
• YouTube streams the calm room's video and music. When it plays, YouTube sets its own cookies under Google's privacy policy.

Beyond these, we would share information only if the law required it or to protect someone's safety.

Usage counters are kept only as long as limits and abuse prevention need them. Account data stays until you ask us to delete your account. Analytics data follows the retention settings of Google Analytics and Vercel. Email is kept as long as the conversation needs it.

• Use the site without an account, and turn on the assistant's private mode to keep the conversation on your device.
• Block or clear cookies in your browser. Nearly everything still works; the cookie policy lists the exceptions.
• Ask us to show you, correct, or delete the personal data we hold about you by writing to contact@spaceservices.org. Depending on where you live, the law may give you further rights over your data.

Space Services is for curious people of all ages, but it is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has made an account, write to us and we will delete it.
